Abstract

Objectives To investigate the level of pro brain naturetic peptide (BNP) in diagnosis of heart failure (HF) patients. Background HF is a complex clinical syndrome that results from either functional or structural weakening of ventricles resulting in symptomatic left ventricle (LV) dysfunction. Methods A case-control study was done on 60 subjects, divided into three groups: Group I: HF patients with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), Group II: HF patients with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) and Group III: apparently healthy controls. For all patients history was taken, general examination and echocardiography for ejection fraction (EF) were done. Lab investigations included liver functions, renal functions, hemoglobin A1C (HbA1c %) and pro BNP. The pro BNP level was assayed by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).
