Abstract
Objectives: to compare the outcome after hypospadias repair using normal gauze dressing versus hydrocolloid dressing. Background: Hypospadias is a congenital anomaly in which the urethral opening is not correctly positioned at the tip of the penis. Patients and methods: a prospective randomized control study that done in general surgery department at Menoufia University Hospital. The study was carried on 46 patients with distal hypospadias. Results: There was statistically significant lower frequency of soiling of the dressing, postoperative edema, adhesiveness and detachment, effectively absorbs the leakages of the wound in patient who were dressed by hydrocolloid dressing than those with normal gauze (p-value 0.010, 0.036, 0.036, 0.001), respectively. There was statistically significant lower frequency of adherence to the incision, postoperative edema, infection and wound healing in patient who were dressed by hydrocolloid dressing than those with normal gauze at time of dressing removal (p-value 0.016, 0.013, 0.044, 0.044), respectively. Post-operative fistula formation in hydrocolloid group was lower than fistula in normal gauze group after 2 weeks, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months but the difference was statistically insignificant (P-value 0.155, 0.636, 0.550, 0.550) respectively. Conclusion: Hydrocolloid offers a superior advantage over normal gauze in postoperative dressing after repairing hypospadias.
