Abstract

Objective: to assess the impact of an educational program about Green Operating Room concept in enhancing the awareness and attitude of operating physicians at National Liver Institute Hospital.

Background: Green Operating Rooms (GORs) are becoming a key element of environmentally friendly medical procedures. The healthcare system, especially in high-risk area like surgical settings, is looking for methods to reduce its carbon footprint as environmental effects become more widely recognized. The study objective was to assess the impact of an educational program about Green Operating Room concept in enhancing the awareness and attitude of operating physicians at National Liver Institute Hospital.

Methods: This study is quasi-experiment pre-post-test design conducted at National Liver Institute (NLI), Menoufia University, Egypt. The study included 78 operating physicians who agreed to participate through the use of a convenience sampling technique.

Results: The total satisfactory level of awareness of operating physicians improved after educational program from 26.9% to 85.9% post-intervention. Also, the total positive attitude increased from 78.2% pre-test to 96.2% post-test. Additionally, the pre-intervention awareness score was positively correlated with attitude (r=0.464, P = 0.001).

Conclusion: The study demonstrated the vital role of education programs in enhancing the awareness and attitude of operating physicians towards green practices in the healthcare system. As the healthcare system transitions to being more sustainable, education intervention will be important in preparing the healthcare personnel to promote and practice eco-friendly approaches.
