Abstract
Objective: To detect the prevalence of depression in chronic kidney disease patients on regular hemodialysis.
Background: Depression has been associated with impaired recovery and increased mortality in many diseases. The psychological health of patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) has been the subject of concern for many years since the beginning of dialytic therapy for ESRD.
Methods: this was across-sectional study conducted on 80 patients on regular hemodialysis who attended hemodialysis units of Qena and Luxor General Hospital, Egypt during the period study from November 2022 till August 2023. Full history taking, laboratory investigations, and depression assessment using the beck depression inventory were done for all patients.
Results: Depression score has statistically significant positive correlation with the age, duration of dialysis, uric acid, urea, PTH, U.F. volume, anxiety score and has statistically significant negative correlation with KT/V, hemoglobin, HCT, Na, K, Ca, albumin, and vitamin D. Logistic regression analysis reveal that the presence of other comorbidities, age >40 years, widow/divorced marital status are associated with increase the risk for depression in patients with CKD on hemodialysis.
Conclusion: Depression in patients with ESRD is potentially devastating. However, despite its high rate and its clear association with negative health outcomes, it is often under recognized. There is patient, provider- and system level barriers to effective depression recognition and treatment in non-mental health settings. unemployment, associated comorbidities, anemia, hypovitaminosis D were found to be risk factors of depression in regular hemodialysis patients
