Abstract
Objectives: To determine the incidence of right ventricle(RV) affection in patients with sepsis and septic shock and the impact of this on fluid responsiveness, incidence of arrhythmia, hospital stay and mortality rate. Background: Cardiac dysfunction in sepsis is common and associated with an increase in mortality rate. Methods: Four hundred adult patients with sepsis and septic shock were enrolled in a prospective observational study by measuring RV size and function and the impact of this on fluid responsiveness through assessment of change in velocity time integrity(VTI) after passive leg raising test. Results: Regarding incidence of RV affection in septic patients, this study demonstrated that function of RV was affected in 9.5% of patients and RV size dilated in 11.5% of patients. Regarding demographic data and patients comorbidities, there was no statistically significant difference between the normal RV group and affected RV group (p-value>0.05), but regarding patients clinical characteristics (SOFA and APACHE) scores there was statistically significant difference among the normal RV group and affected RV group (p-value
