Abstract
Objectives: to determine the epidemiology and clinical features of immune mediated uveitis and to assess risk factors of Uveitis and to clarify diseases associated with Uveitis (AU).
Background: AU is a group of intraocular inflammatory diseases characterized by inflammation of the uvea and other tissues in the eye, including retina, retinal blood vessels, vitreous, and optic nerve. AU is a leading cause of blindness worldwide and accounts for 10–15% of vision loss worldwide.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted at the outpatient department of Rheumatology division of Internal Medicine and department of ophthalmology at Menoufia University Hospitals. Written and informed consent was taken during the period of study from June 2021 to March 2023.
Results: The most common AU cause were Idiopathic in (15.9%), followed by Behcet's in (13.5 %), inflammatory bowel diseases, Multiple sclerosis and SLE in (10.3%) for each. Regarding ocular symptoms, (50.8%) had pain, (49.2%) had redness, (38.9%) of the studied cases had light sensitivity and Photophobia and (16.7%) had Decreased vision. The most common general symptoms were Arthritis in (32.5%), Skin lesions in (13.5%), Oral ulcers in (10.3%), back pain and oral and genital ulcers in (9.5%) visual loss associated with GIT symptoms (dyspepsia, bloody diarrhea) in (7.1%).
Conclusion: Immune-mediated AU are warning signs of underlying systemic diseases and may lead to significant visual limitation, chronic sufferance up to visual loss when the posterior segment of the eye is affected.
