Abstract

Objectives: to compare outcomes of laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) and endoscopic intra-gastric balloon (IGB) in patients with morbid obesity regarding the degree of weight loss in the first year, complications, and improvement of comorbidities.

Background: LSG and IGB placement are widely used treatment modalities for weight loss in patients with morbid obesity.

Methods: A prospective study involved 60 patients who underwent LSG or IGB insertion. Patients were divided into two groups: LSG group, comprising 30 patients who underwent LSG, and IGB group, including 30 patients who underwent IGB insertion. A Follow-up was conducted for all patients over a period of one year.

Results: There was no significant difference in weight and Body Mass index (BMI) between both groups after the first month. However, there was a significant difference after 3, 6 and 12 months. Also, the BMI loss percentage was significantly higher in LSG group (60.38 ± 7.77) compared to IGB group (27.03 ± 4.78). Likewise, excess weight loss percentage (EWL %) was significantly higher in LSG group (58.89 ± 6.23) compared to IGB group (26.51 ± 4.06). Also, during the follow-up period, no major complications were observed in either LSG or IGB groups. Furthermore, there was a significant improvement in the comorbidities in LSG group compared to IGB group.

Conclusion: LSG stands out as an efficient therapeutic option for achieving and sustaining weight loss in morbidly obese patients, as evidenced by superior outcomes observed in this study when compared to endoscopic IGB placement.
